Private patient rooms support privacy, recuperative rest with less noise and interruptions, more room for patients to move around and for medical equipment needed for care, private bathrooms, and can reduce spread of infection

When the hospital opened nearly fifty years ago, semiprivate rooms and even wards were the norm. Today, for many reasons, private inpatient rooms are becoming the standard. Sebasticook Valley Health has looked carefully at the needs of our communities and has developed a plan to offer 15 private rooms and five super-suites.
Super-suites, while semi-private, would be large rooms that offer two separate bathrooms and would be used for patients preferring a semi-private room, for patients in longer-term rehabilitation beds who benefit from socialization, or for patients receiving end-of-life care and have family members staying in the room during their hospitalization.
Private inpatient rooms are becoming the standard because:
• Patients, their visitors, and caregivers may speak more privately
• With only one patient per room there is more opportunity for rest and recuperation with less noise and interruptions
• Larger space allows for better movement for patients, their caregivers, and the equipment necessary for the patient’s care
• Larger private bathrooms will preserve a patient’s dignity
• Private rooms help reduce the possibility of infection
• Private rooms also eliminate the issue of placement of same-gender patients in semi-private rooms

Designed for the Future
• More spacious rooms allow for easier patient, caregiver, and visitor maneuverability
• Separation of caregiver and visitor space so neither is impeded by the other
• Additional room for medical equipment needs
• Privacy features with each patient having their own bathroom in their room
• Furnishings to provide more comfort for patients’ guests
• Super-suites (5 semi-private rooms) with retractable wall and private bathrooms for each patient
• More effective in-room services for our patients who need physical or occupational rehabilitation
• Optimal proximity to nurses’ stations for all inpatient rooms
