Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine uses very small amounts of radioactive materials called radiopharmaceuticals. These are introduced into the body through injection, swallowing, or inhalation. The radiopharmaceuticals are then attracted to specific organs, bones, or tissues: by using a special camera , the pharmaceuticals form an image of the area in question. These images help to diagnose diseases of the heart, bones, thyroid, and other internal organs.
In February 2009, SVH replaced its cameras with a state-of-the-art Siemens system called the Symbia E. This new system features enhanced processing protocols to enhance the clarity of the nuclear medicine images.
Our NMTCB-certified technologists perform nuclear exams Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 AM to 3 PM. If you have any questions or would like help making an appointment, please call 207.487.4040.
