PACS

SVH uses filmless technology called PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System). PACS uses a computer network designed for the acquisition, transmission, display, storage, and retrieval of digital medical images. The benefits of PACS:

Quick access for providers to view images and reports, which facilitates timely and efficient clinical care decisions
Images can be transmitted to various PACS systems within Maine over a secure network established between facilities eliminating the need for patients to retrieve images prior to an appointment.
Images can be enhanced for clarity after the exam, reducing the need to return for additional imaging tests
Doctors have immediate access to images - which is essential in trauma or life-threatening illness situations
Images can be copied onto a compact disc

As a member of EMHS, SVH now has the ability to share images with experts at other member hospitals in a matter of seconds.
