SVH Mammography Service Receives National Accreditation |

Sebasticook Valley Hospital President/CEO John C. May has announced that once again the hospital’s Mammography Service located in the SVH Women’s Health Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This is a rigorous review with national standards that must be met to attain this status.
SVH Director of the Women’s Health Center Sandi Delano, RN shared, “We have a very dedicated team that is focused on providing the best care possible for both women and men who seek mammography services at SVH. October is recognized nationwide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We want stress that early detection through self-exams, clinical exams, and mammograms is the best defense against breast cancer. We are very pleased that the ACR has once again recognized our commitment to quality in providing this service.”
This summer SVH installed a new Digital Mammography Unit with an HD Digitizer that converts old mammography films into digital images for clarity and improved ability to compare images and detect subtle breast tissue changes. The hospital is about to kick off a fundraising campaign to help pay for the new unit.
The ACR, located in Reston, Virginia, awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and adequacy of the facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which then provides the practice with a report.
