| SVH Achieves Critical Access Hospital Status |
| |
Sebasticook Valley Hospital (SVH) President and Chief Executive Officer John C. May has announced that as of October 1, 2005 that SVH will become a Critical Access Hospital. In his remarks May stated, "For five years our Board, our Medical Staff and our Administration has studied the possibility of applying for and becoming a Critical Access Hospital. Maine Department of Human Services grant funding allowed us to carefully research the information we needed to move forward with this decision. On September 22nd, after a very rigorous on-site Critical Access Survey process, we learned that SVH did indeed meet all the requirements. This is exciting news for the communities we serve and for our organization, an integral member of the region. We have been serving the healthcare needs of the people of the Sebasticook Valley and beyond for over forty years, and this new status will allow us to evolve to continue to better serve our patients."
One of the significant changes for the hospital will be the ability to now offer swing beds to patients being discharged from its Medical-Surgical Unit. Inpatients that need additional care and/or rehabilitation before returning home, but no longer needing medical-surgical care, will be able to obtain this care needed for their recovery at SVH.
Critical Access Hospital status, a federal designation, allows hospitals that meet strict program guidelines to increase access to healthcare while containing healthcare costs. The program is designed to help rural hospitals maintain and improve healthcare services needed in their communities.
"We have worked diligently to ensure SVH would meet the qualifications for Critical Access Status. I am very proud of the time and energy our hospital employees and members of our Medical Staff devoted to this effort. Working together, we achieved a true milestone in SVH's history that will benefit the communities we serve for many years to come."
