Karen Baldacci to Speak at SVHCC’s PlainTalk Forum

Sebasticook Valley Hospital President/CEO John C. May recently announced that Maine’s First Lady, Karen Baldacci, will be the guest speaker at an upcoming  Sebasticook Valley Healthy Communities Coalition (HealthySV) community forum called “Underage Drinking: A Community Problem,” on Wednesday, April 16th, from 6 to 8 pm, at Nokomis Regional High School in Newport, Maine. The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of HealthySV’s PlainTalk community forum series.

According to Mr. May, “PlainTalk is an important series of forums that identify and address concerns and issues in our community. Past forums have tackled issues regarding bullying and substance abuse, and positive community efforts have resulted from these important meetings. We are pleased and honored that Mrs. Baldacci will be speaking at this forum about a serious public health concern for our region – as well as for our nation.”

The event is hosted by Sebasticook Valley Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator Kirsten Webster and will address underage drinking in the Sebasticook Valley area and discuss possible solutions and strategies for this problem. With SVH, sponsors for the event include the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Substance Abuse, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and Nokomis Regional High School.

The event will also feature a presentation entitled the “Youth Empowerment Policy Project” by the Nokomis Peer Leaders and a discussion regarding current issues and policies in our area by the Newport Police Department and the Penobscot Sheriff’s Department. A question and answer session will follow, and snacks and door prizes will be available to everyone in attendance.

For more information about this event, please contact HealthySV’s Kirsten Webster at 487-3890 (email: kwebster@emh.org). Sebasticook Valley Healthy Communties Coalition (SVHCC) is a department of Sebasticook Valley Hospital and a Healthy Maine Partnership.
